Agriculture is the world’s largest fresh water user, accounting for over 70% of global consumption and contributes to polluting waters with nutrients and pesticides from agricultural runoff. Water availability is the key driver for food security, but water scarcity and increasing demand and growing competition for water from cities, industry and the environment, are placing immense pressures on water resources. There are opportunities to reduce fresh water consumption in agriculture while increasing agricultural production, such as wastewater reuse providing an alternative supply of water.
